Origins of the Aztecs

The Southampton Aztecs were formed in May of 2021 with just a women's team. It happened largely by accident, with a group of good players turning up, and a speculative application to the National Futsal Series being accepted. Within five months of forming, the Aztecs were live on BT Sport, winning their first televised game, and sponsored by BFCN. Now with a men's team and a second women's team, the Aztecs want to grow the game of futsal in the area.

High Level Futsal

The club has three main ambitions. One of them is to compete at the highest level possible in England on both the men's and the women's side. The club will also soon be forming an academy to create a pathway into senior futsal, and develop young futsal players.

Women's Team

The women's team earned promotion into the top division at the first attempt, finishing third out of eight teams in the south, and securing their place on the final day with a dramatic 3-2 win after being 2-0 down. The drama continued as the team remained in the first division, the FA National Futsal Series, after winning a relegation playoff. The first team are broadcast live on either BT Sport or YouTube and compete all throughout England.

Coaching Opportunities

There is a lack of futsal knowledge and understanding within England. The Aztecs would always be looking to provide opportunities to coaches who want to learn futsal. Even if you are brand new to the sport. Reach out to the team if you are local to Southampton and would like to be involved and join the futsal revolution.

Growing Futsal

It is the responsibility of all clubs to do their part to grow the game. This can happen on many fronts. In addition to youth teams and senior teams, the Aztecs want to establish development centres, work with local grassroots clubs to create their own futsal programmes, create a local league, and provide opportunities for players to play casually.

Men's Team

The men's team compete in the National Futsal League Southern Division, which is the third division of futsal in England. The team formed in the summer of 2022 and has several beginners who are new to futsal, but they are intelligent and skilful players nonetheless. Men's futsal has been developing well in England, and we hope that women's futsal will too.
